Newhaven Sunset

The Newhaven lighthouses set here against a clear sunset sky. The taller structure is the Newhaven Harbour Lighthouse - a cast-iron octagonal beacon built in 1878. The lighthouse hasn’t functioned as a guiding light for many years and its lights are only decorative today. The dome structure to the right is the remains of an 1830s beacon that was used prior to completion of the 1878 lighthouse. This view is taken from the eastern wall of the harbour where there is ample room to set up and take images.

This is an example of where a long exposure works at a harbour location as there are no moving elements - other than water - in the frame. The 4-second exposure has smoothed an already still water surface into a mirror finish. The LED lighting on the taller lighthouse slowly cycles through a rainbow of colours, so be aware that if your exposure is longer than any single colour is active, then those colours will blend in your final image.
