Location description

This long-lens view gathers the landmarks of Calton Hill and outline of Arthur’s Seat into a single golden composition. Shot from Eildon Street off Inverleith Row, the spire of Broughton St. Mary’s Church cuts into the foreground of the shot, though there are multiple viewpoints along Eildon Street to capture slightly varying compositions. Street parking is available on Eildon Street or nearby on Inverleith Row, although this is a fairly accessible shot if walking from the city centre also.

Shooting notes

This winter scene requires a 200mm lens or similar to achieve, ensuring that all the layers from Arthur’s Seat to the nearby Warriston Crescent are compressed into one stacked frame. Shot on a clear January morning soon after sunrise. Shooting directly into the light while the rising sun is still low, will capture the haze between the layers and give the shot depth. Use a tripod for stability or alternatively the railings along the south side of the street are handy to lean against for the same purpose. Move along the street and try framing the composition with tree silhouettes.
